Corsair CMPSU-520HX Review by John Morrison "Curmudgeon" (Azeroth)

I play World of Warcraft. When the recent Wrath of the Lich King expansion came out, I noticed that my video was very sluggish in the new main city, so I splurged for a new hot video card (the Sapphire Radeon HD3850 512MB DDR3 Dual DVI-I / TVO AGP Graphics Card). It came, I popped open my case-- and realized that my old power supply was woefully inadequate.

I have neither PCI Express nor SATA devices, so I was worried about cable clutter. A modular supply seemed just right. This one was the right wattage at a decent price, so I went for it. That $40 game expansion has now cost me $280...

One thing to look out for when ordering: Corsair makes several levels of this power supply, from 520W through 1KW, and I only saw the 520 at first. There is a menu just above the "List price" line on this page that has the others in the HX series.

Eight days later-- so much for three to five days, grumble grumble-- it arrived and moments later it was installed. I'm not up to building my own PC, but I can sure replace components. This merely required taking the old cables off, undoing four screws, and lining up the new PS with the old holes. I have to say that Corsair is great about giving you everything you need; there are cable ties and extra mounting screws, just in case.

And there are all those modular cables! Oh, you will still have a few danglies, if you're like me. My motherboard only takes the 20-pin power cable; the mysterious 4-pin and 8-pin cables have to be tucked into a drive bay. Well, better two than a dozen. These three have sleeves on them so they aren't splaying all over, as with my old power supply.

The one thing I wish was in the otherwise complete (and multilanguage) manual is how to separate the 24-pin motherboard power cable into a 20- and 4-pin. I remember puzzling over this with my old PS, and "you may detach the 4-pin cable" doesn't tell the whole story; I was afraid then, as now, of mangling the connector beyond recognition. But, it all worked out.

The modular cables attach easily. If you're fumble of finger, I'd suggest assessing your power needs before dropping the PS into the case, and attaching the modular cables to the PS at that time; otherwise you have a potentially tight fit. Still, it's only a little worse than connecting the peripheral power to internal HDs, CD drives, and floppies.

Speaking of which, you get a truly generous dose of cables. I was able to use a 3-headed Molex 4-pin cable to power two HDs and the case fan, and a further 2-headed cable plus a Y-adapter to power the CD and floppy. That hot graphics card will go in next and will either mean just one more cable or perhaps that's what the 8-pin attached cable is for. The 4-pin cables were long enough to reach the drives, which are all the way in the bottom bays, without straining at all.

There is also a Y-connector which is only for fans; it has two Molex 4-pin heads but they have only two wires each. Don't use this one for HDs or other devices. There's a full-power Y connector in the bag anyway.

Noise? My old supply was decently quiet, and so is this one. I can hear something of a hum but it's not to the level of being annoying. And the case fan may be contributing to that.

The reviews here were pretty much how I decided to buy this supply. Thanks guys! Time will tell how the system holds up, but I'm so happy with this PS that I would migrate it to a new motherboard in case I ever decide to build my own system. If you're like me, and need good power for a single video card, I'd say that you can't go wrong with the 620w; if you're planning on going to two video cards in the future, get the 1000W. See you in Dalaran!

EDIT: I came back to this review because of vandalism, but read it again and had a few additional comments.

Unlike the callow youth who wrote the initial review, I'm now able to build PCs. In fact, I built one based around the Core i7 and the ATi Radeon 5850 as an economical gaming rig. I had to buy a new motherboard, new CPU, new graphics card, new case-- but not a new PSU. Why? The Corsair 620HX is adequate to the task. And it has lasted for two years now, with no hiccoughs or issues.

In fact, disregard what I said about needing a kilowatt for two graphics cards! My 620W Corsair is powering two HD 5850s, and is completely comfortable with them. It helps, of course, that ATi designed their new generation of graphics cards to be modest power consumers. So are the OCZ solid state disk and the Western Digital Caviar Green HDs. One of my cards takes a 6-pin and an 8-pin cable, and guess what? There was one in the Corsair bag, along with enough SATA power cables to juice up everything inside the case. Finally I get to reattach those 4 extra pins on the motherboard power connector.

So two years later, I like this PSU even more than before. Which is a good thing. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is due out soon, and I'm getting a panoramic 3-monitor setup all ready for it. The only difference is that I've lost track of how much hardware I've sunk into playing WoW. You can bet, though, that when I build my next system, it'll feature a Corsair modular PSU.

Corsair CMPSU-520HX Review by A. Wong (Seattle, WA USA)

Before this power supply I was using an Enermax Liberty ELT620AWT 620W ATX 12V V2.2 Power Supply. It was pretty good. Very consistent, quiet, powerful, modular... Pretty much all I was looking for in a PSU.

But after this upgrade/downgrade (I consider it an upgrade despite losing 100W of power because for my use-case, I benefit more out of the new Corsair)... Anyway, I thought it was a great buy! The power supply is NOTICEABLY quieter than my prior PSU. It's so quiet that I can hear my CPU fan from about 3 feet away... Time to upgrade that now, but all in all I'm very happy with it...

One thing that I would improve though, are the modular cables. They aren't the woven kind that come with other PSUs, they're just plastic cables... a little disappointing when you're paying over $100 for these units.

Corsair CMPSU-520HX Review by J. Watts (USA)

If $$ is not your primary concern when building your system, this is absolutely the highest quality power supply you can buy. Build is rock solid, 120mm fan is quite and does and excellent job of keeping the supply cool under heavy load (i.e. duel SLI setup).

Even the large supply of cables comes with their own little pouch to keep things together.
